Modified Wrestling

For the past three years I have been volunteering my time as the assistant modified wrestling coach at my old high school, South Jeff. It’s amazing to see how much the kids progress throughout the year. Of course you have your standouts that are already good wrestlers, but the kids who amaze me the most are the ones who don’t have the natural talent. These kids have to work hard to get better. These are the kids that give it their all everyday.

By the end of each season I look back to where the kids were on day one. Some of them couldn’t even get into their stances or do a drop step. By the end of the season these same kids are doing moves correctly and winning matches. It makes me feel pretty good as a coach to see them progress so much in such a short time. This year I have been helping out since the beginning of November whenever I can. Now that the semester is over I can be there for the rest of the season and hopefully many more to come.

Ready, Set, Bowl!!

Today for my teaching lesson we did bowling. The lesson overall I felt went pretty well. We started off with the basic release and worked on getting our shots to go straight down the ally. During this time I feel that I gave a good amount of feedback, which was something that I have been struggling with in my past lessons. There were a few disciplinary problems that I had to take care of during the lesson but managed to get through them and continue the lesson.

I made a scoring power point to help the students who did not know how to keep score. I believe this helped the students out a lot. Many students did not know how to keep score before and after walking around and watching I feel that they did in fact learn how to keep score so my power point was a success.

Bowling is a great lifetime activity that anyone can do and have fun with. After class a few of us stayed after to bowl a game. Something I noticed was that anyone really can bowl and have fun. In the lane next to us, there were some disabled children who were bowling and having a great time. Their parents were able to change the environment so they could be successful and have fun, which is the most important thing. On the other end of the bowling ally were a group of older ladies who were all having a great time. I do believe bowling is a limelong activity that i am going to take advantage of through out my lifetime and others should too. I feel like everyone enjoyed this bowling lesson. It was something different for everyone to be able to do and have fun.

Explorer Scavenger Hunt

On Friday for class we had a scavenger hunt around campus. We had different tasks to complete and get our picture taken at each site we went to. We had to sing twinkle twinkle little star to some faculty members which was both fun and funny. Other tasks included running and finding things around campus to get our group picture with. I think this activity was a lot of fun. It required psychomotor, cognitive, and affective skills to complete the challenges, which makes it a suitable physical education lesson. As a future physical educator I would defiantly incorporate something like this for my class to participate in. The scavenger hunt made us think, work together and be physically active all at the same time, which is exactly what we want our students doing. This lesson kept everyone active and using the heart rate monitors allowed us to see our heart rates throughout the lesson and after the lesson. Above is my heart rate information from the lesson.

My Recorded Lesson

A few weeks ago I taught my second lesson of the year. This time I was wearing a microphone that recorded everything I was saying. After teaching I was able to listen to my lesson that I had recorded. I came to realize that I need to project my voice a little better when talking to the class. I also need to work on giving more feedback. When giving feedback I need to get away from the general feedback such as “good job” and move more into specific feedback, using the cues of my lesson when giving feedback. Overall I feel the lesson went alright. If I can start projecting my voice a little more and start giving more specific feedback, my lesson will be even better.

Dr. John R. Passarini

Last Friday there was a mini conference here at the college. Dr. John R. Passarini was the keynote speaker for the conference. Dr. Passarini is the winner of the Disney Outstanding Teacher of the Year award in 2003. He is Adaptive Physical Education Teacher who has made a huge impact on many students’ lives. After listening to and watching video clips about his profession, it makes me want to learn more about Adaptive Physical Education and make myself a better overall Physical Education Teacher.

His motto is that “Nobody is disabled, we are all differently-abled.” One of the strongest things he said for me was that it doesn’t matter if you are working with a world-class athlete or if you are working with someone in a wheelchair, you are going to use the same approach. He said our job is to find the ability level the student is at and ask yourself, what can I do to further their ability level?

Dr. John R. Passarini is an amazing guy who has helped so many people and families. Dr. Passarini has made me want to become a better teacher and learn as much as I can about Adaptive Physical Education. Hopefully when I become a Physical Educator I will have an impact on my students’ lives just as Dr. Passarini does.

The First Day

The first day when we arrived at our 255 class we had to get a partner and teach a skill to the class. My partner was Ben and our skill was catching. I think overall teaching our skill went pretty well however there were some things we could have worked on. We both stay at one end of the two lines that were catching rather than walking back and forth giving people feedback as they were catching. I did walk down the line once towards the end but I should have done that sooner. As far as my voice was, I am not positive how I sounded because the audio on my DVD wasn't working properly. From past experiences I would have to say the tone of my voice when I am talking to a group does need some work. Overall I would say the first teaching experience of the year went well for my group as well as everyone else.
